Why LUX* Le Morne is the best place to stay in Mauritius

The moment you arrive at Lux* Le Morne you’re met with views so cinematic they almost don’t look real: emerald palms swaying against the mountain backdrop, clear turquoise shallows stretching to the horizon, and sunsets that melt into the sea.

Despite being one of the most popular hotels in Mauritius, Lux Le Morne never feels crowded. During my stay, the resort was at full capacity, yet there was a peaceful rhythm to every day – no fight for sunbeds, no queues at breakfast, just calm, friendly service and thoughtful details that make you feel like part of the family. This is a hotel that cares deeply about both people and planet. From its zero-waste journey and solar desalination plant to its partnership with local NGOs like PAWS Mauritius, LUX Le Morne* sets the standard for sustainable luxury in Mauritius.

Rooms and Design

The pavilion-style rooms at LUX* Le Morne feel like elegant seaside sanctuaries – private, serene, and perfectly attuned to their tropical setting. Scattered among lush gardens at the foot of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, each room sits in an individual chalet, offering guests their own tranquil space just steps from the beach or pool.

Inside, you’ll find interiors inspired by the island itself: soft coastal tones, natural textures, and airy terraces that blur the line between indoors and out. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined – think boutique beach house charm with a touch of Mauritian soul.

“Hospitality is the warmth,” says Nootan Jhugroo-Goder, PR and Marketing Manager. “It’s people connecting with people – and that’s the feeling we want guests to take home.”

That sentiment shines through in every detail, from the personalised touches waiting in your room to the genuine smiles of the staff who greet you each morning.

There are 15 pavilions in total, each hosting several room categories ranging from Superior Rooms to Prestige Junior Suites and Ocean View Suites. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, solo, or with family, the layout ensures privacy – you can step straight from your terrace into the pool, or stroll a few metres to the ocean’s edge.

It’s the kind of place where you wake up to birdsong, the scent of frangipani drifting in from the gardens, and views that look like heaven.

💡Insider Tip: Make sure you book early as rooms often sell out far in advance.

Food and Drink

Dining at LUX* Le Morne is a celebration of Mauritian flavour, creativity, and care. Whether you’re sipping coffee beneath the palms or dining under a sky of candles, every meal is designed to delight both the palate and the planet.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served as a luxurious buffet bursting with fresh options – from tropical fruit platters to made-to-order eggs and flaky pastries. While it still embraces the indulgence of a buffet, LUX* Le Morne has thoughtfully considered its environmental impact. Twice a week, freshly prepared leftovers are carefully chilled, packed, and delivered to local primary schools through the NGO FoodWise.

Many of the children who receive these free meals come from less fortunate backgrounds, and this initiative has made a remarkable difference. As a result, partnership schools have reported noticeably less absences. It’s a small act that’s making a big impact.

The resort is proudly on a zero food waste journey, pioneering a more sustainable approach to hospitality in Mauritius.

The mocktails are just as impressive colourful, refreshing, and made with island-grown herbs.

Here’s a glimpse into the eight restaurants and bars that make dining at LUX* Le Morne an experience to remember:

(LUX* Le Morne: Secluded pool at the LUX* Me Spa)

LUX* Le Morne’s LUX* Me Spa is tucked away in a tranquil corner of the resort. As you stroll past water features and fitness facilities, a veil of calm falls over you.

The spa features multiple secluded treatment cabins surrounding a private pool, quieter than any other on the property. You wouldn’t even know it existed without visiting. Facilities include a modern gym, sauna, and steam room.

The staff at LUX* Me Spa are exceptionally welcoming, instantly making you feel at ease. Anne Barbe, Spa and Wellness Manager, is passionate about her work and clearly puts immense care into every detail. She personally showed me the spa’s signature sound baths, explaining how the ancestral frequencies restore balance and promote deep relaxation. Anne also demonstrated her homemade coconut balm, crafted in-house and used in treatments or available for purchase in the spa.

Many of the spa rituals draw from Mauritian heritage, blending tradition with modern wellness. Guests can enjoy salt scrubs, purification therapies, and personalised massages designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. From the choice of ingredients to the careful presentation, every therapy connects you to the island’s natural bounty and cultural roots. You leave not just relaxed, but immersed in the essence of Mauritius.

Guests can start the day with sunrise yoga on the beach, listening to waves, or unwind with meditation overlooking the Indian Ocean. Fitness enthusiasts can join guided stretching classes, gym sessions, or mountain hikes.

Every treatment connects visitors to Mauritius’s natural and cultural heritage, blending relaxation, wellness, and island tradition.

💡 Insider Tip: Ask for the “Mauritian Bliss” massage – it combines deep relaxation with natural oils sourced from local farms.

Activities and Experiences

The staff at LUX* Le Morne are incredibly accommodating, offering activities for every type of guest. Adventure meets tranquillity here, making it one of the top resorts in Mauritius for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.

Guests can explore the Indian Ocean with snorkelling, paddleboarding, or glass-bottom boat trips. On land, hike the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant, chase waterfalls at Chamarel, or cycle through nearby villages to meet locals. Or, for a more gentle pace, enjoy Mauritian cooking classes, catamaran cruises, or sunset yoga on the beach.

The hotel also celebrates culture and creativity. The Junk Art Gallery, run by local artist Ruth, showcases works made entirely from recycled materials. Guests can join workshops, learn Creole, and transform everyday objects into colourful, sustainable art.

A big takeaway the hotel encourages guests to reflect on is the history and culture of Le Morne Mountain. Visitors can learn about the island’s slavery past, local heritage, and traditional life, experiencing both the tranquil south coast and the busier north around Grand Baie. Guided cultural excursions with knowledgeable Mauritian drivers make it easy to immerse in the real Mauritius.

For little explorers

LUX* Le Morne reimagines the kids club experience with PLAY, a modern and mindful space for children aged 3–11.

Little travellers can learn new skills, make friends, and gain independence while exploring Mauritius. Activities include gardening, nature walks, sandcastle building, shell painting, and treasure hunts on the beach.

Supervised by a qualified team, PLAY ensures children enjoy fun, safe, and educational experiences, giving parents a moment of peace or time to enjoy the spa, beach, or adventures.

Sustainability Features

When asked how LUX* Le Morne blends luxury with sustainability, Nootan Jhugroo-Goder, PR and Marketing Manager explained the hotel’s philosophy:

“We believe luxury attracts sustainability. Barefoot luxury isn’t always glamorous, but it’s personal – where the traveller feels valued.”

This ethos extends beyond guests to the local community and environment. The hotel depends on local farmers, artisans, and suppliers for food, activities, and materials, ensuring a positive impact for everyone involved.

With 380 employees, LUX* Le Morne invests in their team’s wellbeing, offering health checks, eye exams, fair wages, and plenty of free activities. Staff are encouraged to treat the hotel as their home – a philosophy reflected in the personal touches and emotional experiences that guests notice everywhere. For example, the iconic treehouse, now one of the resort’s extraordinary experiences, was built by staff during COVID, who also took part in painting and maintaining the rooms.

The Keen on Green menu showcases the resort’s commitment to health and sustainability. While catering to all diets, it prioritises plant-based, locally sourced ingredients. LUX* Le Morne is also on a zero food waste journey, aiming to reduce environmental impact while still offering indulgent cuisine.

The resort has its own desalination plant, producing clean water for the property and further reducing its footprint.

Circle of Care

A standout initiative at LUX* Le Morne is their Circle of Care programme, part of the broader LUX* network of hotels. Each year, different hotels focus on unique community and environmental projects. For example, Lux Belle Mare runs turtle tagging projects, while Grand Gaube hosts “Dinner in the Dark” experiences for visually impaired participants. You can read more about LUX*’s Circle of Care and its sustainable ethos in my SALT of Palmar article, another hotel in Mauritus focused on combining luxury with sustainability.

At LUX* Le Morne, the highlight of Circle of Care is their cat adoption programme. Many strays now call the hotel home. Locals and guests can adopt them, while the hotel runs a sterilisation campaign and partners with the NGO PAWS Mauritius. A shelter at the back of the hotel ensures the cats are safe and cared for, creating a tangible, heartwarming connection between guests, staff, and the local community.

From personalising experiences to caring for animals and reducing waste, LUX* Le Morne proves that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully, giving guests a sense of meaning alongside their five-star stay.
